Josef Bolf studied painting under Jiří Načeradský, Vladimír Kokolia and Vladimír Skrepl at Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1990-98). He was a member of Bezhlavý Jezdec / Headless Rider group (1996-2002, together with Ján Mančuška, Tomáš Vaněk and Jan Šerých). He was on stipend in New York in 2007. There are strange, often suffering characters in his work which is considered depressive and full of melancholy. One of his famous techniques is scratching the wax crayon covered with black ink. Bolf was a finalist of Jindřich Chalupecký Award in 2005.
